Chi non ha mai acquistato – e poi montato ovviamente – un mobile IKEA™? Beh, per la verità moltissimi non l’hanno mai fatto… bene, a costoro questo articolo non interesserà per nulla. Agli altri forse… 😉

Quasi tutti i mobili IKEA™, in particolare gli armadi della serie “PAX” e le – potremmo dire famose – librerie “BILLY”, hanno un particolare alla base (e non intendo “alla base” in senso metaforico, ma reale) che trovo migliorabile soprattutto da un punto di vista estetico.
Qui illustrerò come e perché effettuare questa modifica, che se allunga un attimo il processo di montaggio, apporta un miglioria che durerà il tempo di durata del mobile stesso… insomma un piccolo sforzo in più, per un qualcosa più.

Who has never ever bought – and then assembled, clearly – an IKEA™ piece of furniture? Well, actually a lot of people haven’t … those ones will not be interested at all in this article. The others, maybe they will. 😉

Almost every furnishing IKEA™, in particular the wardrobes of the “PAX” collection and the – we could say famous – bookcases “BILLY” have a choice at the base (and I’m not meaning “base” in the metaphorical sense, but real) that I think could be improved, especially from an aesthetic point of view.
Here I’m going to illustrate how and why to make that change. Even though the process of assembly will be extended a little bit, that would influence the lifetime of the furnishing itself … therefore, a little effort more, to not think of it anymore.

I’m talking about the detail that function as closure and finishing part of the furnishing above mentioned … to make it clear, the one indicated with the arrow in the picture below.

Sto parlando del particolare che fa da chiusura e finitura alla base dei mobili su citati… per capirsi, quello indicato dalla freccia nell’immagine qui sotto.

Al di là dello stato in cui si trova questa vecchia Billy, che ha visto tempi migliori, potete notare come il particolare che sto descrivendo, si trovi arretrato rispetto il fronte e il fianco del mobile.
Sinceramente non ho trovato una giustificazione a questa scelta, neppure dal punto di vista strutturale, dato che non sono i pochi centimetri di arretramento che danno un sostanziale aumento alla solidità o stabilità del mobile, ma, come sostengo, peggiorano solamente il risultato dal punto di vista estetico, soprattutto quando ritroviamo vari moduli affiancati – vedi qui sotto.

The state of this old Billy aside, you can notice how the particular that I’m describing is backward in respect to the front and the side of the bookcase. Sincerely, I haven’t found a reason for this choice, not even from the structural point of view, since these few centimeters don’t increase substantially the solidity or stability of the furnishing, but, as I sustain, only worsen the aesthetic result, especially when we have many modules flanked – see below.

Said that, how can we intervene?

Qui sopra vediamo il fianco sinistro, nel suo spigolo inferiore-anteriore. I due fori più alti sono destinati al montaggio del piano di base, i due più in basso verticali, sono quelli che ci interessano, perché devono alloggiare i perni dell’elemento di cui stiamo parlando.

In the image above we see the left side, in its anterior-lower edge. The two upper holes are destined to the assembly of the base, the lower vertical ones, are the ones in which we are interested, because they have to accommodate the linchpins of the element we’re talking about.

L’immagine sopra mostra lo stesso spigolo con l’elemento di base già montato. Dobbiamo portare i fori, più avanti per avere il frontale di chiusura in linea non tanto con il fianco, ma con il profilo anteriore dell’elemento di base.

The image above shows the same edge with the base element already assembled. We have to bring ahead the holes in order to have the closing front lined up with the anterior profile of the base element.

Posizioniamo manualmente l’elemento frontale, in linea con lo spigolo inferiore della base…

Questo ci consente di tracciare un riga di riferimento nel lato interno nascosto, che servirà poi per riportare, con un righello e una semplice misurazione, un riferimento per il centro dei nuovi fori.

This allows us to trace a landmark in the hidden interior side, that will be necessary to report, with a ruler and a simple measurement, a reference for the center of the new holes.

In alternativa, più rapidamente, si possono usare questi particolari punzoni (si trovano in ferramenta in kit con punta da legno compresa), da inserire nei forni destinati ai perni di legno. Una volta messo il pezzo in posizione, con una semplice pressione, lasciano il solco dove appoggiare poi la punta da trapano.

In alternative, more quickly, we can use these particular punches (they can be found in every hardware store in kits with wood tip included), that inserted in ovens destined to the wood linchpins, once positioned the piece with a simple pressure, leave the rut where we have to put the tip of the drill.

In ogni caso sconsiglio forature fatte “a occhio” o con punte inadatte (quella che vedete in foto è dotata di fermo corsa, per non trovarvi dall’altra parte!). Diversamente otterrete un pessimo allineamento per pezzo e il risultato estetico sarà peggiore di quello originario.

In any case, I advise against holes made by eye or with unsuitable tips (the one in the picture is provided with throw-off). Otherwise you will obtain an awful lineup and the aesthetic result will be worse than the original.

Semmai qualcuno dell’IKEA™ si trovasse a leggere questo articolo, un consiglio: il profilo inferiore del particolare oggetto dell’articolo, è lasciato grezzo (come si può vedere dalla foto sotto – freccia rossa). Ora, sebbene non sia una parte a vista, questa sfiora il pavimento e, come sappiamo, il pavimento ogni tanto viene anche lavato… quindi acqua, quindi facilmente questa viene assorbita dal lato lasciato grezzo, con le conseguenza che facilmente possiamo immaginare (rigonfiamento del pezzo).

Meglio sarebbe rifinirlo come il fianco (freccia verde)… capisco il risparmio, però…

If someone from IKEA™ ever read this article, an advice: the inferior profile of the particular object of the article is, as you can see in the picture (red arrow), left rough. Now, even though that’s not a part in view, that one brush against the floor and, as we know, sometimes the floor needs washing … so water, very likely to imbibe the side left uncovered, with the consequences you can easily imagine.

It would be better to refine as the side (green arrow) … I get the saving, but …

A proposito di risparmio, ho l’impressione che gli elementi che fanno da schiena, in particolare alla Billy, si siano andati sempre più assottigliando nel tempo… sebbene sembri un particolare di relativa importanza, questi fanno da reale “fondo corsa” a ciò che poniamo sui ripiani e non c’è nulla di più anti-estetico di schienali “bombati”, incurvati, distaccati dai vari ripiani…
Sebbene il vantaggio di una libreria a ripiani mobili, sia appunto quello di spostare i ripiani alla bisogna, la cosa migliore sarebbe bloccare gli schienali alla mensole, una volta decisa la loro posizione. Farlo sempre e comunque con i ripiani alla base e alla sommità della libreria, nonché con il ripiano mediano, che è strutturale e non può essere spostato. Meglio non utilizzate i semplici chiodi in dotazione (che tendono a sfilarsi), ma utilizzare viti da legno di adeguata misura.

Un ultimo consiglio: se intende fare della Billy un vera libreria “da libri” (magari belle e toste enciclopedie), evitate il modulo da 80 cm. Meglio svilupparla tutta con quelli da 40 cm. Le mensole e il sistema di aggancio delle stesse (per quanto ultimamente migliorato), su un modulo 80 cm, non reggono molto bene il peso. Se una mensola da 80 è veramente carica di libri, inesorabilmente flette vistosamente e, anche ammesso non ceda, non è un bel vedere.

About saving, I have a feeling that the elements at the back, in particular in the Billy, have gradually wearing thin in time … even though it seems a detail of relative importance, these are a real throw-off to what we put on the shelves and there’s nothing more anti aesthetic than rounded, curved, detached backs …
Although the advantage of a bookcase with mobile shelves is exactly the possibility to move them, the best way would be to lock the shelves to the back, once you’ve decided the position. Better not to use the simple spikes in equipment (that tend to slip out), rather use wood spikes of the right dimension.

My last advice: if you want to make of Billy a real bookcase (for books – maybe tough encyclopedias), avoid the 80 cm module. Better to expose all with the ones of 40 cm. The shelves and the coupling system (though lately improved) on a 80 cm module, can’t carry the weight. If a 80 cm shelf is really loaded by books, it relentlessly bend and, even supposing that it won’t cave in, that’s not good to see.
